Thailand operates its education system under the Ministry of Education (กระทรวงศึกษาธิการ), structured into three years of pre-primary education (อนุบาล), six years of primary education (ประถมศึกษา), three years of lower secondary (มัธยมศึกษาตอนต้น), and three years of upper secondary (มัธยมศึกษาตอนปลาย). The system serves approximately 13 million students across 37,000 schools, with around 600,000 teachers. The national curriculum is taught in Thai, with English as a compulsory foreign language from primary level. Students take the Ordinary National Educational Test (O-NET) at Prathom 6 (Grade 6), Mathayom 3 (Grade 9), and Mathayom 6 (Grade 12), with O-NET scores forming part of the university admission process. The system includes both ordinary schools and specialised schools (โรงเรียนเฉพาะทาง), including science schools, arts schools, and boarding schools for ethnic minority students. Private schools account for roughly 15% of enrolment, particularly in Bangkok and major cities.
Academic Year Structure
The Thai school year runs from mid-May to mid-March, organised into two semesters: Semester 1 from mid-May to mid-October, and Semester 2 from mid-November to mid-March. The long break between semesters (ช่วงปิดเทอม) typically falls in October and early November. Schools receive a short break around the Buddhist observance days and a longer summer break from mid-March to mid-May.
