School System in Russia

Russia operates its education system under the Ministry of Education, structured into four years of primary education, five years of basic general education, and two years of secondary general education. The system follows the federal state educational standards, with Russian as the language of instruction alongside republic languages and foreign languages. Students sit the OGE at the end of grade 9 and the Unified State Examination (EGE) in grade 11, which determines higher education entry, and the system serves over 17 million students across more than 40,000 schools.

Academic Year Structure

The Russian school year runs from September to late May, organised into four academic quarters with breaks after each quarter and a long summer holiday from June to August. Administrators plan around the quarterly structure, national holidays, and the OGE and EGE examination windows in May and June.

The Challenges We Solve

Common School Administration Challenges in Russia

School administrators in Russia face a unique set of challenges shaped by the country's education system, regulatory environment, and cultural expectations. Here are the most pressing pain points we hear from Russian educators:

1

Russian schools must align with the federal educational standards while accommodating the diversity of republic languages and regional approaches across the vast country.

2

The four-quarter academic structure requires careful coordination of assessment across more breaks than a two-semester system.

3

Administrative capacity in public schools is often stretched, with many schools relying on limited non-teaching staff.

4

The OGE and EGE examinations are high-stakes gateways to higher education, demanding careful coordination of scheduling and reporting.

5

Teacher supply and professional development are uneven between large urban centres and rural communities.

Have a challenge we haven't listed? We are actively building new tools based on what educators tell us. If your school faces a specific administrative problem, email us at [email protected] — your input directly shapes what we build next.

Frequently Asked Questions — Russia

Yes. The holiday preset library includes Defenders of the Fatherland Day, International Women's Day, Victory Day, Russia Day, Unity Day, and other public holidays. You can add school-specific events and mark examination windows with custom colours.

Can the tools help coordinate OGE and EGE preparation?

Yes. The Exam Timetable Builder creates conflict-free schedules for termly assessments and mock examinations, and the Academic Calendar Builder lets you mark the OGE and EGE windows across the school year. The print-friendly output is ideal for schools that distribute timetables in hard copy.

Are these tools compliant with Russia's data protection framework?

All SchoolKit tools run entirely client-side in your browser. Student names, attendance records, and any other information you enter never leave your computer. No data is transmitted to any server, stored in any database, or shared with any third party, which supports the confidentiality expectations for student records.

Can the tools be used offline in schools with limited connectivity?

Yes. After the initial page load, all SchoolKit tools work offline because every calculation happens in your browser. PDF exports mean calendars, registers, and notices can be printed and shared even where connectivity is limited.
