School System in Poland

Poland operates a national education system under the Ministry of National Education, with a structure reformed in 2017 to return to an 8-4 model: eight years of compulsory primary school (szkoła podstawowa, ages 7-15) followed by four years of secondary education in a liceum (academic), technikum (technical), or branżowa szkoła (vocational). The system serves roughly 4.6 million students. The Egzamin ósmoklasisty at the end of primary school and the Matura at the end of secondary school are the key national assessments, with the Matura determining university entry through the central recruitment system.

Academic Year Structure

The Polish school year runs from September 1 to late June, organised into two semesters with a two-week Christmas break, a short winter break in January or February, and a break around Easter. The Egzamin ósmoklasisty takes place in May, and the Matura in May and June, with the written Matura administered centrally by the Central Examination Board (CKE). The calendar must accommodate the regionally staggered two-week winter breaks (ferie zimowe) that vary by voivodeship.

The Challenges We Solve

Common School Administration Challenges in Poland

School administrators in Polandface a unique set of challenges shaped by the country's education system, regulatory environment, and cultural expectations. Here are the most pressing pain points we hear from Polish educators:

1

Poland's education system is large and centrally coordinated. The Central Examination Board (CKE) runs the Egzamin ósmoklasisty and Matura, and schools must align local administration with centrally set examination schedules and security rules.

2

The 2017 structural reform changed school types and year groups, and administrators continue to manage the transition effects on staffing, buildings, and records.

3

The Matura is high-stakes for university entry, and its May and June sessions must be coordinated without clashes while maintaining examination security across thousands of schools.

4

Teacher recruitment and retention are pressing issues, with salary levels and workload driving shortages that administrators must manage within tight budgets.

5

The regional winter breaks and the dense network of public holidays require careful calendar planning to preserve teaching time across the two semesters.

Frequently Asked Questions — Poland

Does the Academic Calendar Builder include Poland's national holidays?

Yes. The holiday preset library includes Three Kings' Day, Constitution Day (May 3), Independence Day (November 11), Corpus Christi, and the other public holidays, along with the regional winter breaks. You can add school-specific events and mark the Matura and Egzamin ósmoklasisty windows with custom colours.

Can the tools help prepare for the Matura examination?

Yes. The Exam Timetable Builder creates conflict-free schedules for mock Matura examinations and end-of-year assessments, and the Academic Calendar Builder lets you mark examination windows across the school year. The print-friendly output is ideal for schools that distribute timetables in hard copy.

Are these tools compliant with Poland's data protection law?

All SchoolKit tools run entirely client-side in your browser. Student names, attendance records, and any other information you enter never leave your computer. No data is transmitted to any server, stored in any database, or shared with any third party, which inherently supports the GDPR-aligned data protection principles that apply in Poland.

Can the tools be used in rural schools with limited resources?

Yes. After the initial page load, all SchoolKit tools work offline because every calculation happens in your browser. PDF exports mean calendars, registers, and notices can be printed and shared even where connectivity is limited, which is important for schools in rural gminy.

Is there a tool you need that we haven't built yet?

Nieustannie tworzymy nowe narzędzia w oparciu o opinie nauczycieli i dyrektorów szkół z całej Polski.
